Jupiter sets its own dock lengths, lift layout and seawall cap rules. We design around them and file the Town, state and water district paperwork.

The short answer

In Jupiter, a dock on a man-made canal may project 5 ft or 10% of the canal width, whichever is greater, and on a natural waterway no more than 20% of its width or 50 ft, whichever is less; docks and lifts in canals must sit parallel to the bulkhead (Town of Jupiter). Work on the Loxahatchee River, the Intracoastal or Sawfish Bay also needs SFWMD approval.

What makes Jupiter different

Town Code 27-2626 keeps half of every waterway clear: a centreline channel of 50% of the waterway width must stay unobstructed, or at least a 15 ft channel where that cannot be met. Only rectangular, T and L shaped docks are allowed unless the Planning and Zoning Director approves another shape.[3]

Who approves what

The Town's checklists ask for FDEP self-certification or exemption verification, Army Corps approval if not included in the DEP decision, and SFWMD approval for structures on submerged lands or in natural waterways such as the Loxahatchee River, the Intracoastal Waterway and Sawfish Bay.[1][2]

Frequently asked questions

How far can my dock go out in Jupiter?

On a man-made canal, 5 ft or 10% of the canal width, whichever is greater. On a natural waterway, 20% of the width or 50 ft, whichever is less. Longer docks need a Town waiver.

Does a boat lift have to be parallel to my seawall in Jupiter?

In canals, yes. Town Code 27-2626(b)(11) requires docks, boat lifts and PWC lifts in canals to be parallel to the bulkhead unless the Director allows another layout.

Do I need SFWMD approval in Jupiter?

For structures on submerged lands or in natural waterways, including the Loxahatchee River, the Intracoastal and Sawfish Bay, the Town's checklists say yes.
