The short answer

Replacing a dock piling costs $300 to $1,600 per piling, according to Fixr's 2025 national guide. In Miami-Dade, replacing fender or mooring piles in the same spot is exempt from a DERM Class I permit when a contractor with a certificate of competency notifies DERM 24 hours ahead (Miami-Dade DERM, 2025).

Signs a piling needs replacing

Check at low tide.

  • Wood worn thin at the waterline (an hourglass shape)
  • Deep splits or a piling that moves when you push it
  • A dock that sags between pilings

How pilings go in

Pilings are driven or jetted into the bottom from a barge or the dock. Federal SPGP VI did not authorise impact-hammer installation of metal pipe or metal sheet piles, so steel work takes a different federal route. All in-water work follows the state manatee conditions: work stops if a manatee comes within 50 ft.[3][4]

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a dock piling?

Fixr's 2025 national range is $300 to $1,600 per piling. Water depth, piling length and access drive the price.

Do I need a permit to replace pilings?

In Miami-Dade, same-spot replacement of fender or mooring piles is DERM-exempt under set conditions. Structural dock pilings and new pilings need a permit.
