The short answer

Boat lifts in Boca Raton need signed and sealed lift drawings with pile details and the manufacturer's specs, per Palm Beach County's marine structure checklist, and a final marine structure survey under the City's Chapter 22 process (City of Boca Raton). A 10,000 lb four-post lift installed in South Florida runs $7,000 to $14,000 (ThePricer, 2026).

Typical project sizes

Most residential lifts are four-post or elevator lifts in the 10,000 lb class, plus PWC lifts. New pilings can turn a $10,000 lift project into $15,000 or more (ThePricer, 2026).

Lift paperwork

Palm Beach County treats docks, seawalls, boat lifts and boathouses as Type 8 marine structures. The checklist is dated 2005, so we confirm current City requirements, but signed and sealed drawings remain standard.[1]

Final survey

Boca Raton requires a final marine structure survey for docks and lifts after construction.[2]

The 45 degree side lines

Boca Raton structures must stay inside lines projected waterward at 45 degrees from the side property lines, and the seawall wet face sits on the property line (Sec. 26-146). On a pie-shaped lot at the end of a canal those lines can shrink the space for a lift or davit to a few feet.

Small boats may suit davits instead, under the same rules.[4]

Docks that stop 6 to 8 ft out

Single-family freestanding docks in Boca Raton may protrude no more than 6 to 8 ft waterward of the seawall, depending on canal width (City Code 22-58). That is much tighter than the limits in the other cities we serve, so marginal docks along the wall and seawall-mounted lifts are the usual answer.[4]

Tide on Lake Boca Raton

NOAA's Lake Boca Raton gauge, just inside Boca Inlet, records a 2.19 ft mean range and a 2.47 ft great diurnal range (1983 to 2001 epoch). With the dock band set in NAVD88 and the tide close to the inlet's, lift and float travel is planned from these numbers.

Lift travel is set from that tide range plus your boat's draft.[5]

What makes Boca Raton different

Plan review needs a current-conditions survey showing the seawall wet face or bulkhead line, the property line and piles, section details with the finished cap elevation, and a proposed site plan. Inspections are staged: a location survey before the cap is poured and before the structural cap and piling inspections, a final engineer report on cap elevation with photos, and a final marine structure survey for docks and lifts.[2]

Agencies beyond the City

Palm Beach County's marine structure checklist for unincorporated areas lists the outside approvals agencies expect to see: FDEP, the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) and the Army Corps, as applicable. That checklist is dated 2005, so we confirm current requirements for each job. The federal seagrass range used in dock design covers Palm Beach County waters.[1][6]

Permits for boat lifts in Boca Raton

  • City of Boca Raton Development Services: Marine structure permits under City Code Chapter 22, with staged survey and engineer inspections.
  • Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND): May be involved for work along the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • Florida DEP or South Florida Water Management District: State permit or exemption for docks, walls and lifts on Lake Boca Raton and the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • US Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District: Federal authorisation along the Intracoastal, which the Palm Beach County checklist expects to see with the building permit.

Lift permits in South Florida

In Miami-Dade a boat lift on a new or existing dock, seawall or bulkhead is a short-form DERM permit, and a single-family lift may not protrude more than 25% of the waterway width. Palm Beach County treats lifts as Type 8 marine structures and asks for signed and sealed lift drawings with pile details. Under SPGP VI, lifts could go in existing boat slips without a seagrass survey, and two uncovered lifts were allowed.[8][1][6]

How long should a boat lift last?

Manufacturers we checked do not publish a fixed lifespan. What they do publish is upkeep: rinse after each use, inspect at least once a season, have it serviced at least once a year (more often in salt water), replace worn cables at once and change sacrificial zinc anodes regularly.[9]
