The short answer

NOAA's Lake Boca Raton gauge shows a 2.47 ft great diurnal tide range just inside Boca Inlet. A freestanding dock in Boca Raton may reach only 6 to 8 ft past the seawall, depending on canal width (City Code 22-58).

Who a floating dock suits

Owners with deep water at the wall, frequent wakes, a small boat, kayaks or a jet ski, or a seawall too high for an easy step down.

Typical project sizes

Most residential floating docks are a single platform with a gangway, comfortably under the 500 sq ft state exemption for floating platforms.

Tide on Lake Boca Raton

NOAA's Lake Boca Raton gauge, just inside Boca Inlet, records a 2.19 ft mean range and a 2.47 ft great diurnal range (1983 to 2001 epoch). With the dock band set in NAVD88 and the tide close to the inlet's, lift and float travel is planned from these numbers.

Floats, guide piles and gangway length are sized from that range so the gangway stays walkable at low water.[1]

Docks that stop 6 to 8 ft out

Single-family freestanding docks in Boca Raton may protrude no more than 6 to 8 ft waterward of the seawall, depending on canal width (City Code 22-58). That is much tighter than the limits in the other cities we serve, so marginal docks along the wall and seawall-mounted lifts are the usual answer.

Floating sections count toward the same size limit as a fixed dock.[2]

The 45 degree side lines

Boca Raton structures must stay inside lines projected waterward at 45 degrees from the side property lines, and the seawall wet face sits on the property line (Sec. 26-146). On a pie-shaped lot at the end of a canal those lines can shrink the space for a lift or davit to a few feet.[2]

What makes Boca Raton different

Plan review needs a current-conditions survey showing the seawall wet face or bulkhead line, the property line and piles, section details with the finished cap elevation, and a proposed site plan. Inspections are staged: a location survey before the cap is poured and before the structural cap and piling inspections, a final engineer report on cap elevation with photos, and a final marine structure survey for docks and lifts.[3]

Agencies beyond the City

Palm Beach County's marine structure checklist for unincorporated areas lists the outside approvals agencies expect to see: FDEP, the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) and the Army Corps, as applicable. That checklist is dated 2005, so we confirm current requirements for each job. The federal seagrass range used in dock design covers Palm Beach County waters.[4][5]

Permits in Boca Raton

  • City of Boca Raton Development Services: Marine structure permits under City Code Chapter 22, with staged survey and engineer inspections.
  • Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND): May be involved for work along the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • Florida DEP or South Florida Water Management District: State permit or exemption for docks, walls and lifts on Lake Boca Raton and the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • US Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District: Federal authorisation along the Intracoastal, which the Palm Beach County checklist expects to see with the building permit.

Do you need a permit for a floating dock?

Usually yes, at county and city level. Florida's exemptions cover private docks on pilings or floating up to 1,000 sq ft and floating vessel platforms up to 500 sq ft, but they do not remove county and municipal requirements. In Miami-Dade any structure over tidal water needs a DERM Class I permit.[7][8]

Frequently asked questions

How much does the tide move in Boca Raton?

NOAA's Lake Boca Raton station shows a 2.19 ft mean range and a 2.47 ft great diurnal range (1983 to 2001 epoch).

How far out can a dock go in Boca Raton?

A single-family freestanding dock may protrude no more than 6 to 8 ft waterward of the seawall, depending on the canal width, under City Code 22-58.

Why does lot shape matter for a boat lift in Boca Raton?

Because structures must stay inside lines projected at 45 degrees from the side property lines. On narrow or pie-shaped lots that leaves less room.
