The short answer
NOAA's Jupiter Inlet gauge shows a 2.75 ft great diurnal range, one of the larger tides in South Florida. Jupiter docks may project 5 ft or 10% of a canal's width, or 20% of a natural waterway's width up to 50 ft.

Who a floating dock suits
Owners with deep water at the wall, frequent wakes, a small boat, kayaks or a jet ski, or a seawall too high for an easy step down.
Typical project sizes
Most residential floating docks are a single platform with a gangway, comfortably under the 500 sq ft state exemption for floating platforms.
Inlet tide on the Loxahatchee
NOAA's Jupiter Inlet south jetty station records a 2.39 ft mean range and a 2.75 ft great diurnal range, with mean higher high water about 0.19 ft above NAVD 88 (1983 to 2001 epoch). Lift travel and floating dock gangways near the inlet are planned from this gauge.
Floats, guide piles and gangway length are sized from that range so the gangway stays walkable at low water.[1]
Canal docks and river docks have different limits
On a man-made canal, a Jupiter dock may project 5 ft or 10% of the canal width from the high water line, whichever is greater. On a natural waterway such as the Loxahatchee, the limit is 20% of the width or 50 ft, whichever is less, so river lots usually get the longer dock.
Floating sections count toward the same size limit as a fixed dock.[2]
Half the waterway stays open
Jupiter keeps a centreline channel of 50% of the waterway width unobstructed, or at least 15 ft where that is impossible, and allows only rectangular, T and L docks unless the Director approves another shape. Piles for docks and lifts are laid out against that channel line first.

Pilings are the part of a dock most often replaced, so the piling rule matters as much as the deck.[3]
What makes Jupiter different
Town Code 27-2626 keeps half of every waterway clear: a centreline channel of 50% of the waterway width must stay unobstructed, or at least a 15 ft channel where that cannot be met. Only rectangular, T and L shaped docks are allowed unless the Planning and Zoning Director approves another shape.[3]

Who approves what
The Town's checklists ask for FDEP self-certification or exemption verification, Army Corps approval if not included in the DEP decision, and SFWMD approval for structures on submerged lands or in natural waterways such as the Loxahatchee River, the Intracoastal Waterway and Sawfish Bay.[4][2]

Permits in Jupiter
- Town of Jupiter Building and Planning and Zoning: Marine structure permits; dock waivers under Town Code 27-2626.
- Florida DEP or South Florida Water Management District: FDEP self-certification or exemption verification for canal docks; SFWMD approval for structures in the Loxahatchee River, the Intracoastal and Sawfish Bay.
- US Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District: Army Corps approval where the FDEP decision does not include it, as the Town checklists note.
Do you need a permit for a floating dock?
Usually yes, at county and city level. Florida's exemptions cover private docks on pilings or floating up to 1,000 sq ft and floating vessel platforms up to 500 sq ft, but they do not remove county and municipal requirements. In Miami-Dade any structure over tidal water needs a DERM Class I permit.[6][7]

What goes into the install
- Float sections and decking
- Anchoring to pilings or the seawall
- Aluminium gangway with hinges for the tidal range
- Cleats, bumpers and lighting
Frequently asked questions
How much does the tide move in Jupiter?
At NOAA's Jupiter Inlet south jetty station, a 2.39 ft mean range and a 2.75 ft great diurnal range (1983 to 2001 epoch).
How far can my dock extend in Jupiter?
On a man-made canal, 5 ft or 10% of the canal width, whichever is greater. On a natural waterway, 20% of the width or 50 ft, whichever is less.
What dock shapes are allowed in Jupiter?
Rectangular, T and L docks, and shared U-shaped terminal platforms, unless the Planning and Zoning Director approves another shape. Half the waterway must stay open.
