The short answer
Replacing a seawall in South Florida cost $650 to $2,000 per linear foot in Fort Lauderdale's 2016 contractor survey, plus $2,000 to $5,000 for engineering and permits. In Miami-Dade a new wall at the mean high water line or no more than 18 inches waterward of the old one is a short-form DERM permit approved by staff, without a public hearing (Miami-Dade DERM, 2025).

When replacement makes sense
Replacement is the answer when panels are cracked through, the wall leans, repairs would cost more than half of a new wall, or the wall is too low for your city's new standard.
- Panels cracked through or leaning
- Repeated sinkholes despite repairs
- A city notice to raise or rebuild
- Planned dock or lift work that needs a sound wall
Typical project sizes
On a 75 foot lot, the 2016 range of $650 to $2,000 per linear foot works out at roughly $48,750 to $150,000 before engineering, permits and any dock or lift reset. Today's prices are higher than in 2016.
What a seawall replacement involves
A Florida engineer designs the wall to the site's soil, water depth and the local top elevation. Most replacements go in front of the old wall, which stays in place as backing, because removing it can undermine the yard.

- Survey and engineered drawings
- DERM, city and state approvals
- Turbidity barrier and manatee watch in the water
- New panels or sheet piles, tiebacks and cap
- Backfill, drainage and yard restoration
How far out can the new wall go?
Florida Statute 403.813 exempts restoring a seawall at its previous location, upland of it, or within 18 inches waterward of it. Miami-Dade's short form and the federal SPGP VI use the same 18 inch line, measured wet face to wet face, and need no seagrass survey within it.[4][3][5]
Federal permits
Under SPGP VI, the Florida DEP could verify the federal Army Corps authorisation for qualifying seawall work along with the state decision. That permit's stated expiration date was 27 July 2026, and we have not been able to confirm a replacement, so for each job we confirm the federal route with the agencies before we file.[5][6]
Working around manatees
Permits attach the state's Standard Manatee Conditions: all in-water work stops if a manatee comes within 50 ft, and resumes only once it has moved beyond 50 ft or 30 minutes pass without it reappearing. Turbidity barriers must not entangle or block manatees.[7]

Frequently asked questions
How long does a sea wall last?
Fort Lauderdale's seawall ordinance FAQ assumed about 50 years of design life, and city engineers described 30 to 50 years for a wall built today.
How much does it cost to replace a seawall per foot?
Government figures put it at $650 to $2,000 per linear foot (Fort Lauderdale, 2016) and $1,000 to $1,500 per linear foot to bring an old wall to code (Miami Beach, 2017). Prices are higher today.
How deep does a seawall need to be?
The depth of the panels or sheet piles is set by the engineer for each site, based on soil and water depth. Miami-Dade requires plans prepared by a Florida-licensed engineer at submittal.
Do I need a public hearing for a new seawall?
Not for a typical replacement. In Miami-Dade a wall at the mean high water line or up to 18 inches waterward is a short-form permit approved by staff. Larger work such as dredge and fill goes to a hearing.
